Can schizophrenia be cured?

Schizophrenia is a serious mental health disorder that does not yet have a cure. However, thanks to many advancements in schizophrenia research and pharmacology, the disease can be effectively managed in many patients and the outlook for a person with schizophrenia has improved greatly.

Although there is no cure for schizophrenia, people are able to overcome their symptoms to varying degrees. Some people with less severe forms of schizophrenia may have periods of time during which they have very little disability, and medications and therapy allow some people with schizophrenia to live fairly normal lives. Others always show visible symptoms of schizophrenia, even when being treated with medication, and some people experience severe symptoms that get progressively worse with time.

The progression and prognosis of a schizophrenia diagnosis is highly individual, and how well symptoms can be managed depends both on the person and their treatment plan. While a cure may not be possible, most people will improve to some degree with help from a doctor or therapist.
