Hi Melanie, It sounds

Hi Melanie,
It sounds like a challenging situation with your husband. Without more information, however, I am limited in my response.

As for talking to himself, it could be that he is responding to auditory hallucinations (i.e., he's hearing voices and talking back). But some people do process things out loud, including rehearsing conversations they would like to have with someone (e.g. when someone does something that angers or upsets them).

To an outside observer, this might look strange, but it's not due to psychosis.

As for the abrupt changes in his mood or demeanor, that could be due to a variety of things. He may have a personality disorder, although it's impossible to say based on that.

If this is a fairly new change in his normal personality and behavior, it would be a good idea for him to be evaluated by a mental health professional or his primary doctor. I hope you can express your concerns with him (e.g., "You don't seem to be yourself lately...I'm worried about you") to open the door to a conversation.

I hope this helps.

Dr. Cheryl Lane
