Lorazepam as a Treatment for Schizophrenia

Treating schizophrenia with medication often yields positive results. Nowadays, there are many widely available drugs that are used to treat psychosis, and a schizophrenic patient might benefit from any number of medication combinations or varying rounds of treatment with different doses.

What is Lorazepam

Lorazepam--brand name Ativan--is one medication used to treat schizophrenia. Commonly prescribed for anxiety disorders, lorazepam is also used to treat bipolar disorder, panic attacks and the symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.

Lorazepam and Schizophrenia

In schizophrenics, lorazepam may be helpful in treating the agitation symptoms that tend to come with the disease, such as anxiety, insomnia, mania or aggression. Since the drug has a calming effect, patients will usually experience a more even mood and fewer episodes of rage or violence.

Drug Combinations

Lorazempam is typically not the only medication a schizophrenic will need. Most patients will benefit from drugs in the antipsychotic class, which can help suppress hallucinations and delusions. It may take several months, or even years, to find the right combination of drugs that will work for a schizophrenic. Additionally, these doses may need to be either increased or decreased over time.

Side Effects

As with most medications, lorazepam may come with side effects. The most common symptoms include sedation, dizziness, weakness, depression, headaches, and sleep disturbances. Caution should be exercised when using lorazepam if you are a smoker or drinker, as drug interactions can be dangerous.
