Abilify approved by FDA for schizophrenia

On Thursday the FDA approved Abilify as a treatment for schizophrenia.

The once-a-month injectable form of the drug comes in "cake" form, which means it has to be diluted with sterile water and injected by a healthcare professional.

Last July, the FDA refused approval for the medicine, stating that there were deficiencies during a third-party inspection of a sterile water supplier.

The new form of the drug is aimed to help prevent schizophrenics from relapsing, and it's being marketed as especially helpful for patients who don't regularly take their medications. Abilify is also used to treat other conditions, like bipolar disorder, depression and the irritability associated with autism.

Reported side effects of the drug include weight gain, sleepiness, decreased sexual function and high blood sugar levels.

Global sales of the drug reached $2.8 billion in 2012. Abilify will be sold by Japanese drugmaker Otsuka and Danish drug group Lundbeck.
