Drug in Clinical Trial May Improve Cognitive and Negative Schizophrenia Symptoms

Cyrenaic Pharmaceuticals, a New Jersey-based company, released results of a phase IIa clinical trial for an investigational schizophrenia drug, named CYR-101. According to the press release, the drug treats the cognitive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Cognitive symptoms include difficulty maintaining attention and memory deficits while negative symptoms include emotional flattening, lack of concern for life, a lack of speech, speaking only in short sentences, social isolation and lack of energy. Currently, no schizophrenia drugs improve cognitive and negative symptoms, indicates the pharmaceutical company. Results for this phase IIa trial conducted in France are encouraging, with volunteers who received the drug experiencing a better score on a negative symptoms scale and improved cognition versus those who received a placebo.

The status of a phase IIa trial means that the drug has been tested in phase I trials for safety and dosage. If the trials are continued, a phase IIb trial will likely be conducted with a larger number of volunteers. If the results are acceptable, a phase III trial may then be conducted with a still larger number of volunteers. FDA approval may potentially follow and the drug may become available in the United States.

This future of this drug will be watched by the mental health community as it seems to have fewer reported side effects than the schizophrenia medicines currently on the market and is showing evidence of meeting an unmet need in the realms of negative and cognitive schizophrenia symptoms.
