Johnson & Johnson recalls schizophrenia drug due to mold

Risperdal Consta, a Johnson & Johnson schizophrenia drug, has been recalled by the company after officials found mold during a routine testing process.

A company spokeswoman made the announcement, which is the latest in a string of recalls for the New Bruswick, N.J. company over the past two years.

Risperdal Consta - an antispychotic that is prescribed for bipolar and schizophrenia patients - will be removed from wholesalers, pharmacies, healthcare providers and distributors immediately.

"We estimate that fewer than 5,000 dose packs remain in the market considering our current inventory levels and the usage of this product," spokeswoman Robyn Reed Frenze told Reuters.

Since the drug is injected, it is stored in doctor's offices and health centers where it is administered to patients. The recalled lot did not include Risperdal pills, which patients can take at home. The recall letter stated that the mold discovered was a common type that could cause infection at the injection site. Patients with compromised immune systems, therefore, could be at high risk for systemic infection, the company stated.

Yet Reed said the incidence of infection with the compromised lot hasn't been higher than what is typical, so patient risk is low.

"The quality of our products is a primary concern of ours, and all of our products undergo rigorous testing," the spokeswoman added.

Other recalled products

Two weeks ago, the company also recalled about 200,000 bottles of infant Motrin drops, reports the Wall Street Journal, due to the possibility that they might contain tiny plastic particles.

Other products that have been recalled in recent years include Children's Tylenol, hip-replacement parts and contact lenses.
