Adverse outcomes, like premature death and violent crimes, on the rise in schizophrenics

Since the 1970s, rates of premature death and violent crimes in people with schizophrenia are increasing, a new study reports.

Research that included nearly 25,000 people in Sweden with schizophrenia found that, compared with the general population, adverse outcomes in this vulnerable population are much higher - and that suicide is also a great risk for those afflicted with schizophrenia.

Drug use and criminal behavior increase risk for adverse outcomes

The study found that within five years of a schizophrenia diagnosis, about 1 in 50 men and women died from suicide. About one in 10 men and one in 37 women with the condition were convicted of a violent crime within a year of diagnosis. Finally, men and women with schizophrenia were eight times more likely to die prematurely than individuals without the condition.

"Risk factors for violence and premature death were broadly similar, and included drug use disorders, criminality, and self-harm, all before diagnosis suggesting that improved strategies to address these risk factors have the potential to reduce violence and premature deaths across the population," a press release stated.

Secondary prevention is key

According to Dr. Seena Fazel, study author, while focusing on primary prevention of schizophrenia, secondary prevention - treating risk factors for adverse outcomes like violent behavior - is just as crucial:

"Risks of these adverse outcomes relative to others in society appear to be increasing in recent decades, suggesting that there is still much work to be done in developing new treatments and mitigating risks of adverse outcomes in people with schizophrenia."

A study published earlier this year found that individuals who take antipsychotic medications to treat conditions like schizophrenia are about half as likely to commit a violent crime than the general population.
