Doctors Discuss Psychosis Risk Syndrome

Doctors look at psychosis risk syndrome as an early diagnosis for those who may develop schizophrenia:

"The day the visions and delusions took over her mind completely was the day Karen Dare decided she needed to die.

She was convinced she was going to be the conduit for the apocalypse, that an evil force was about to unleash itself onto the world through her body.

"I need to kill myself," she thought. "I can't be responsible for the destruction of humanity."

She doesn't remember screaming, but she must have, because suddenly paramedics were in her room shouting questions. She couldn't make sense of what they were saying. She couldn't speak or move.

It was her second psychotic episode, and the first time the doctors spoke the word, schizophrenia. She was 23, but ever since Grade 9, Dare began feeling different and disconnected from the world around her, as if everyone were "fake" or actors, and that nothing was real."
