Does cannabis relieve psychosis?

Contradicting research abounds on the relationship between marijuana and schizophrenia, but a new study suggests that properties in cannabis may help to alleviate symptoms of psychosis.

The findings, which were part of a review published in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, suggest that in both animals and humans, cannabis can mitigate symptoms like paranoia in schizophrenics.

Fewer side effects?

The authors cite one 2012 study that compared the effectiveness of non-psychotropic cannabinoid Cananbidiol (CBD) to the anti-psychotic prescription drug Amisulpride on schizophrenic patients with acute paranoia. The results showed that both agents worked, but CBD produced fewer side effects.

In many animal model studies, CBD has been shown to offer anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-epileptic and anti-cancer properties.

"Given the high tolerability and superior cost-effective-ness, CBD may prove to be an attractive alternative tocurrent antipsychotic treatment, possibly in specific sub-groups of patients," the researchers wrote.
