New Alkermes drug could help reduce violent episodes

The problem for many schizophrenics who take medication is that long-term drug adherence is difficult for most individuals with the condition.

Yet early studies into a new drug, aripiprazole lauroxil, show that injections of this medication gradually break down over time in the body, producing aripiprazole - which is currently sold on the market as Abilify. The new drug might deliver the benefits that would be seen with oral aripiprazole, but without the need for daily doses.

As Forbes' John LaMattina reports, aripiprazole lauroxil could be appropriate for patients that can't stick to regular oral medication and, ultimately, could help decrease a schizophrenic's tendency toward violent episodes.

The research

Clinical trials with aripiprazole lauroxil have been completed by Alkermes, and the drug has performed as researchers hoped. In a 12-week study, nearly 600 patients received once-monthly injections of aripiprazole lauroxil. Results showed the drug to be as safe and effective as aripiprazole.

Alkermes will be filing a New Drug Application for aripiprazole lauroxil later this year.

"This drug, if properly used, provides a way to help to reduce violent crimes in our society," LaMattina wrote.
