Omeros announces positive results from schizophrenia drug trials

Omeros corporation announced today that their clinical trials involving a new drug were well tolerated and showed promising results for patients with schizophrenia.

The company's OMS824, a phosphodiesterase 10 (PDE10) inhibitor, helps to block an enzyme expressed in areas of the brain that are linked to diseases that affect cognition, like schizophrenia and Huntington's disease.

The drug showed positive results when administered alone and with approved antipsychotic agents, a press release stated.

The trial

The Phase 2a trial included 33 patients who were given two dose levels for two weeks. Results showed that OMS824 was well tolerated, and patients experienced only mild or moderate adverse effects that were resolved during the period of the trial, researchers reported.

The company plans to start enrolling patients with Huntington's disease in a new clinical trial with OMS824. The drug is being evaluated for its effectiveness when used as a single medication or with other antipsychotic drugs to treat acute symptoms or to assist when patients haven't been responsive to other medications.
