Scientists Make Strides In Reversing Memory Deficits, A Key Indicator Of Schizophrenia

Using a chemical compound to regenerate connections between brain cells, researchers have found they can restore memory deficits in mice - which can be a key indicator of schizophrenia.

As an indicator of stunted brain cell growth, memory deficit can be a difficult symptom to treat in patients with this life-altering condition, according to researchers at Columbia University Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute.

“This represents an invaluable new strategy for treating schizophrenia and highlights the critical importance of basic biological research in psychiatric disorders,” said Joseph Gogos, principal investigator of the study. “Understanding how schizophrenia originates in our model lends critical insight into the disorder as a whole, paving the way for improved treatment options that have thus far remained elusive."

Memory deficit’s impact on everyday life

While delusional behavioral, auditory hallucinations and paranoia are typically recognized as common symptoms of schizophrenia, these can often be treated with medication. However, symptoms such as decreased IQ, limited attention span, and difficulty remember specific words brought on by memory deficits have proved to be challenging to treat. The symptoms associated with memory deficit can make a person’s ability to maintain friendships or jobs extremely difficult.

"Memory deficits are now considered a core feature of schizophrenia and are believed to be strongly tied to the disorder's underlying biology," said contributing researcher, Joshua Gordon "Until we can shed light on that biology, these symptoms remain virtually impossible to treat."

According to Dr. Gogos, schizophrenia affects nearly 1 in every 100 human beings.
